Jardín Zine — Editorial Layout & Poetic Interpretation

Editorial designer responsible for translating contemporary poetry into visual form through typographic systems, spatial composition, and image-text relationships for an independent literary zine.

Each spread required a sensitive visual interpretation of a poem while preserving the author’s voice and readability within a fixed print format. Typographic hierarchy, pacing, and imagery had to support meaning without overpowering the text, balancing expression with restraint.

Role

Editorial Designer

I designed this spread by establishing a clear typographic hierarchy that controls pacing and guides the reader through the poem. Scale, spacing, and alignment were used to create visual gravity and intentional pauses, allowing the text to unfold rhythmically while maintaining clarity and emotional weight.

This spread explores tension between expressive typographic gesture and structured text layout. Decorative elements and image placement were carefully calibrated to amplify the poem’s intensity while preserving reading flow, compositional balance, and editorial discipline across the page.

I approached this layout with a restrained visual language, prioritizing space, texture, and subtle imagery to guide the reader through the poem. Pacing and silence were treated as design tools, allowing minimal intervention to support emotional and cultural nuance without visual excess.

Typography is integrated directly into the visual composition, using framing and spatial relationships to direct reader movement through the poem. Image and text function as a single system, reinforcing narrative atmosphere while maintaining legibility, rhythm, and editorial cohesion.
